Picnics are just about throwing a few snacks and a picnic blanket into a Bag for Life and finding a spot at your favourite park, right? Wrong! Few things are as life-affirming as a well-executed picnic. Here’s how to avoid some of the many picnic pitfalls you might encounter.
1. Don’t share drinks with bugs
There’s nothing worse than sharing your tipple with the flies. To keep out unwelcome winged insects, pop a cupcake case on top of your glass – remember to make a hole for your straw – et viola! Bug-free bubbly!
2. Store salads in mason jars
Not only will this trick make your picnic look very Pinterest-pretty, but by storing your salads in a mason jar instead of the usual plastic Tupperware, your salad leaves will stay crisp until it’s time to eat. Bon appetite!
3. Pack lemon oil or citronella candles
To keep away any unwanted winged visitors, light a lemon oil or citronella candle. To you, these outdoor candles will smell like the Mediterranean, but flies will steer well clear.
4. Wrap glass bottles in the picnic blanket
Wrap all glassware, including your precious bottles of fizz, in the blanket as you pack your perfect picnic. Nobody wants to cry over broken bubbles!
5. Pack bin bags
Always remember the binbags to clear up afterwards, and leave our beautiful countryside unspoilt – as if you were never there.
6. Freeze bottled water
Freeze bottled water the night before to act as ice blocks to keep your food and drink cool. Once the water defrosts, it will be a perfect refreshing treat in the warm British sunshine – if the weather holds, that is!
7. Bring an umbrella
As much as we eagerly anticipate the fabled August heat-wave, always bring an umbrella. After all, this is the UK! Not only will your umbrella protect you from any spots of rain, but if you’re lucky enough to stay dry you can always open it up, hang it from a tree and store supplies inside.
8. Remember the shower curtain
No, we’re not suggesting alfresco showering… unless, of course, you decide to pitch up your picnic at the local naturist hang out! Rather, placing a shower curtain underneath your picnic blankets will keep you from getting wet or dirty from the grass.
